Custom Orthotics Q&A

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts designed specifically for your feet. As a result, they’re more effective (and longer-lasting) than inserts or heel pads that you buy at the grocery.

At Greater San Antonio Podiatry, Dr. Santellana uses custom orthotics to correct foot abnormalities, reduce the risk of injuries, and help people live active, pain-free lives.

What conditions might benefit from custom orthotics?

At Greater San Antonio Podiatry, Dr. Santellana prescribes custom orthotics to treat a wide range of foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Bursitis
  • Diabetes
  • Flat feet
  • Heel spurs
  • Foot pain
  • Pediatric foot problems
  • High arches
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sports injuries

You might also benefit from custom orthotics if you experience leg, hip, or lower back pain.

What are the types of custom orthotics?

Dr. Santellana offers several types of custom orthotics, including:

Rigid “functional” orthotics

Rigid orthotics are made from inflexible materials like carbon fiber. They slip inside close-toed shoes, helping ease foot pain.

Soft “accommodative” orthotics

Accommodative orthotics are soft and bulky. They’re made from padded materials and help relieve pressure from problems like heel pain or diabetic ulcers. Because of their size, you wear accommodative orthotics with prescription shoes.

What is the process for getting custom orthotics?

At Greater San Antonio Podiatry, getting custom orthotics takes two visits.

First custom orthotics visit

Before recommending orthotics, Dr. Santellana asks about your symptoms, reviews your medical records, and conducts an exam. If he identifies an underlying problem, like a bunion, a hammertoe, or flat feet, you qualify for treatment.

Dr. Santellana asks you to remove your shoes and socks. Then, he uses a digital scanner to capture three-dimensional impressions of your feet. Dr. Santellana uploads your scans to a computer design program. Then, he sends your scans to a podiatry lab. The podiatry lab uses the scans to design and manufacture a pair of custom orthotics.

Second custom orthotics visit

A week or two later, when the lab finishes your orthotics, you return to Greater San Antonio Podiatry. Dr. Santellana has you try the custom orthotics on. He observes your gait and posture and makes adjustments as necessary, ensuring a perfect fit.
